Sifnian architecture presents several differences from the rest of the Cyclades. Its more elaborate snow-white houses are adorned with decorated chimneys. "Flari" are residences with a spacious room which looks to the sun, as well as a bedroom and a kitchen connected to each other with openings. The houses, white-washed narrow alleyways, countless staircases, windmills and the blue domes of the chapels compose a lovely picture. Another characteristic of Sifnos is its white towers with the triangular decorations in gullies or mansion's farmland, or on rock tops. Even in ancient years, Sifnians knew about the richness of their island in aluminium deposits. They exploited it by creating earthenware, decorations and statuettes. They gradually became better and better and their skill passed from father to son. The potters, or "tsikalades", left their homes and emigrated to neighbouring islands and Athens, where one can admire wonderful samples of their art. Sifnians have remained simple people despite the fact that their island enjoyed great prosperity and wealth. They keep their tradition alive in arts as well as at the festivals. Their feasts are very boisterous with impromptu songs and local dances. In the carnival, they dance "Kir' Vorias" (Mr North Wind), a way of thanking God for the end of winter. In February, they celebrate the "Lolopanigiro" (Crazy Feast), which goes back to paganistic times. CHURCH OF PANAGIA GERANIOFOROU The church of Panagia Geranioforou is situated in Apollonia. It is built on the site of a previous church, and it is the most beautiful temple on the island. Outside, one can admire the impressive bell-tower, while inside the golden icon stand and the beautiful icons are priceless. On the lintels, the beautiful representations of St George and the Virgin Mary date back to 1767. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MONASTERY OF PANAGIA HRISSOPIGI The celebrated monastery of the island's patron saint "Panagia Hrissopigi" (Our Lady of the Golden Spring) stands at the south-eastern end of the island. It was built in 1650 in a lovely area on the site of an older church. The icon of Zoodohos Pigi is mentioned in a great many legends which allege that it came from the sea. Inside the monastery, there are cells which serve as guest houses. According to an inscription, the great Greek poet Aristomenis Provelegios stayed in one of them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MONASTERY OF PANAGIA TIS VRISSIS The Monastery of Panagia tis Vrissis, or Lady Vrissiani, is situated at a settlement called Exabela a little further along Apollonia. It was built in the 17th century on a site where the old chapel of Agios Antonios existed earlier, and for a long period of time, it has been declared property belonging to the Patriarchate of Constantinople. In the interior of its katholikon (lodger), a remarkable wood-carved screen is preserved, as well as old icons, beautiful frescoes and a small collection of rare manuscripts and ecclesiastical gems. On September 8th, the Monastery's feast-day, a huge festival takes place which attracts a lot of pilgrims from all over Milos. The shops of Sifnos sell lovely ceramics with original designs. Also, the shops at the market place sell pretty handmade textiles, embroidery, nosebags and woven carpets. Lastly, one should taste the excellent "xinomizitrha" cheese as well as local wine, rolls, and delicious traditional sweets.
